Summary
Cistus × aguilari, commonly known as Aguilari’s Rockrose, is a natural hybrid shrub resulting from the cross of Cistus ladanifer subsp. mauritianus and Cistus populifolius subsp. major. This evergreen plant is native to the Mediterranean region, thriving in dry, open areas such as scrublands and rocky hillsides. It typically grows at a moderate rate to a height and width of 3-4 feet (0.9-1.2 meters). Aguilari’s Rockrose has a bushy, rounded form with sticky, lance-shaped leaves. Its large, white flowers with yellow centers are quite showy and bloom profusely in the spring and early summer, attracting pollinators.
The plant is valued for its drought tolerance and showy flowers, making it a popular choice for water-wise gardens, rockeries, and Mediterranean-themed landscapes. It is also used as a ground cover or in border plantings. Aguilari’s Rockrose requires minimal maintenance once established and is resistant to deer browsing. For optimal growth, it should be planted in full sun and in well-drained soils such as clay, loam, or sandy types. It is tolerant of poor soils and requires low amounts of water, making it suitable for xeriscaping. While generally disease-resistant, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
