Summary

Cistus revolii, commonly known as Orchid Rockrose, is a shrub native to the Mediterranean region. It thrives in maquis and garigue, two types of Mediterranean shrublands characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. This plant is often found on limestone soils and in mountainous areas. It typically grows at a moderate rate to a height of 4-5 feet (1.2-1.5 meters) and a width of 5-8 feet (1.5-2.4 meters). The Orchid Rockrose has a bushy habit with gray-green leaves and bears large, showy, purple-pink flowers with a maroon spot at the base of each petal, blooming profusely in the spring and sporadically throughout the summer.

The Orchid Rockrose is valued for its drought tolerance and showy flowers, making it an excellent choice for water-wise gardens, rockeries, and coastal plantings. It is also used for erosion control on slopes. This plant is well-suited to full sun exposure and prefers well-drained soils, including clay, loam, or sandy types. It is remarkably low maintenance, requiring little water once established, and is generally free of serious pests and diseases. However, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly draining soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
