Summary

Cladium mariscus, commonly known as swamp sawgrass or sawtooth sedge, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to a variety of wetland habitats including fens, marshes, and the margins of lakes and slow-moving rivers across temperate the Americas, Europe, Australia and Asia. It is characterized by its tall stature, often reaching up to 8 feet (2.4 meters) in height, and its distinctive leaves with hard, serrated edges that can cut skin, hence the name "sawgrass." The plant forms dense clumps and has brownish inflorescences that are not particularly showy, blooming in the summer months.

Swamp sawgrass is valued for its ability to stabilize soil and provide habitat for wildlife in wetland areas. It is used in naturalistic plantings in water gardens and as part of wetland restoration projects. While it is not typically used in conventional garden settings due to its size and habitat requirements, it has historical significance for its use in thatching roofs. Swamp sawgrass prefers full sun to part shade and requires consistently wet soil conditions, often thriving in waterlogged or inundated soils. It is not drought-tolerant and may suffer in dry conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
