Summary
Clarkia cylindrica, commonly known as Speckled Fairyfan or Speckled Clarkia, is an annual herb that is endemic to California. It thrives in a variety of habitats including chaparral, oak woodlands, and grasslands, particularly within the southern California Coast Ranges, western Transverse Ranges, and the southern Sierra Nevada foothills. This plant typically grows erect to about 1.6 feet tall and has linear leaves that can reach up to 2.4 inches in length. The inflorescence bears several flowers, each with petals up to 1.4 inches long, showcasing a beautiful array of lavender, white, and magenta hues, often speckled with purple or pink, which bloom in the late spring to early summer.
Speckled Fairyfan is appreciated for its showy flowers that add a splash of color to wildflower gardens, meadows, and informal borders. It is relatively easy to grow from seed and can be used to create a naturalized setting or as part of a pollinator garden, attracting bees and butterflies. It prefers full sun to light shade and requires well-drained soils; it is also drought-tolerant once established, making it suitable for xeriscaping. While it is not commonly afflicted by diseases, it can be susceptible to powdery mildew in humid conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
