Summary
Clarkia gracilis, commonly known as slender clarkia, is an annual herb native to the chaparral, oak woodlands, and grasslands of California, extending into Oregon and Washington. It typically grows in open areas that receive ample sunlight, such as meadows and the edges of forests. Slender clarkia reaches a height of 12 to 60 inches (30 to 152 cm), with an erect, slender stem and narrow, lance-shaped leaves. The inflorescence consists of drooping buds that open into distinctive bowl-shaped flowers during late spring to summer. These flowers exhibit a range of pinkish lavender petals, often with red or white splotches, and are quite showy, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
In cultivation, slender clarkia is valued for its delicate, ornamental flowers and is often used in wildflower gardens, borders, and naturalized areas. It is relatively easy to maintain, requiring minimal care once established. This plant prefers full sun but can tolerate light shade and requires well-drained soils. While it is drought-tolerant once established, regular watering during prolonged dry periods can promote more robust growth and flowering. Slender clarkia is not commonly associated with serious diseases or pests, but it can be susceptible to powdery mildew in humid conditions. It is also known for its ability to self-seed, which can be advantageous for naturalistic plantings but may require management to prevent unwanted spread.CC BY-SA 4.0
