Summary
Claytonia lanceolata, commonly known as Lanceleaf Springbeauty, is a deciduous perennial herb native to moist meadows, forest clearings, and alpine regions in the Western and Intermountain regions of the United States and Canada. It grows from a tuber one to three centimeters wide and produces a short, erect stem reaching a maximum height of 15 cm (6 in). The plant typically bears two rounded basal leaves and may produce additional stem leaves before flowering. Its thick, succulent leaves are an adaptation for water storage. Lanceleaf Springbeauty blooms in early spring, showcasing star-shaped flowers in inflorescences of three to fifteen blooms. The flowers are white or pink with distinctive veiny stripes and yellow blotches near the base of each petal, attracting early-season pollinators. The fruit is a small capsule containing shiny black seeds.
Lanceleaf Springbeauty is valued for its early spring flowers, which add delicate beauty to woodland gardens and naturalized areas. It is often used in rock gardens, borders, and as a ground cover in appropriate climates. This plant prefers partial shade to full sun and requires moist, well-drained soils with a preference for cooler conditions. It is relatively low maintenance but may require additional water during dry spells. While generally free of serious pests and diseases, it can be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils. Lanceleaf Springbeauty is not known for being invasive and is a charming addition to native plant gardens.CC BY-SA 4.0
