Summary

Clematis glycinoides, commonly known as Headache Vine, is a deciduous perennial vine native to the moist eucalypt forests and rainforest margins of Eastern Australia. It can vigorously climb to 15 m (49 ft) using its leaf stalks to twine around supports. The leaves are simple, lanceolate to oblong, and measure 1.5–12 cm (0.59–4.72 in) in length and 1–8 cm (0.39–3.15 in) in width. From July to December, it produces cream-white flowers that are most abundant in September. The flowers are dioecious, with male and female flowers occurring on separate plants. After flowering, the seedheads display feathery ’tails’ up to 6 cm (2.4 in) long, which are quite decorative.

Headache Vine is valued for its ability to cover unsightly structures and provide a lush backdrop in gardens. It is often used for trellises, arbors, and fences. This species is also appreciated for its long flowering period and the textural interest of its seedheads. It prefers a position with full sun to part shade and requires medium water and well-drained soil. While generally easy to maintain, it can be susceptible to clematis wilt and should be monitored for aphids and scale insects. Pruning can be done to maintain shape and promote vigorous growth.CC BY-SA 4.0
