Estimated Native Range
Summary
Clematis viorna, commonly known as Vasevine or Leatherflower, is a deciduous perennial vine native to open woodlands and forest edges in the Southeastern United States. It can grow up to four meters long, with stems that are either glabrous or sparsely covered with long or short soft hairs below the nodes. Vasevine produces one to seven flowers per leaf axil, which are bell-shaped to broadly-urn shaped, and bloom in the spring and summer. The flowers are particularly striking, with sepals that mimic petals, ranging from light purple to reddish-purple, and gradually transitioning to a creamy yellow at the tips. This vine is valued for its showy flowers and ability to climb structures, making it a popular choice for trellises, arbors, and fences.
Vasevine is appreciated for its ornamental flowers and versatility in the garden. It can be used to cover unsightly features or create vertical interest in small spaces. While it thrives in full sun to part shade, it prefers a location with its roots in the shade and foliage in the sun. It requires medium amounts of water and well-drained soil. Vasevine is relatively low maintenance but benefits from pruning to encourage vigorous growth and flowering. It is susceptible to Clematis wilt, a fungal disease that can cause sudden wilting and death of the plant.CC BY-SA 4.0
