Estimated Native Range
Summary
Clerodendrum inerme, commonly known as glory bower or seaside clerodendrum, is a perennial shrub native to coastal forests, mangrove margins, and beachfronts of Australia, Asia, Malesia, and the Pacific islands. It typically grows to a height of 6-10 feet (1.8-3 meters) but can reach up to 33 feet (10 meters) in ideal conditions. The plant has woody, smooth stems and features glossy, elliptical leaves that are dark green in color. Glory bower produces clusters of fragrant, white flowers with long stamens that extend beyond the petals, blooming throughout the year in tropical climates. The flowers are followed by small blue or black berries encased in a fleshy red calyx, which are attractive to birds.
Glory bower is appreciated for its ornamental flowers, which are particularly showy, and its ability to thrive in coastal conditions where other plants may struggle. It is often used for hedging, border planting, and as a specimen in tropical and subtropical gardens. The plant prefers full sun to partial shade and requires well-drained soil. It is salt-tolerant, making it suitable for seaside planting. While it is drought-tolerant once established, regular watering promotes lush growth and flowering. Gardeners should be cautious as Clerodendrum inerme can become invasive outside its native range due to its ability to spread via root suckers and seed dispersal by birds.CC BY-SA 4.0
