Summary
Clintonia andrewsiana, commonly known as Andrew’s Clintonia, is an evergreen perennial herb native to the moist, shaded forest floors and redwood forests of California and Oregon. This species typically stands 30 to 80 cm (12 to 31 in) tall and spreads through underground rhizomes. It features a basal rosette of glossy, broad leaves and produces clusters of striking, bell-shaped flowers that are typically blue to purple, occasionally with pink hues, in late spring to early summer. The flowers are followed by blue berries that are attractive to wildlife but not edible for humans.
Andrew’s Clintonia is valued for its ornamental foliage and flowers, which add a splash of color to shady garden spots. It is often used in woodland gardens, shade gardens, and native plant landscapes. Gardeners appreciate its low maintenance requirements once established. It thrives in moist, humus-rich soils and requires consistent moisture, making it suitable for areas with medium to high water availability. While it prefers full to partial shade, it can tolerate morning sun if kept sufficiently moist. It is not known for serious pest or disease problems, but slugs and snails can sometimes be an issue. Andrew’s Clintonia is not typically invasive but should be monitored to ensure it does not spread beyond desired areas.CC BY-SA 4.0
