Estimated Native Range
Summary
Cochlospermum vitifolium, commonly known as Poro Poro or Buttercup Tree, is a deciduous tree native to tropical dry forests, savannas, and seasonally dry areas in Central and South America, ranging from Mexico to Brazil. It typically reaches a height of 20 to 33 feet (6 to 10 meters) and a width of 15 to 20 feet (4.5 to 6 meters). The Buttercup Tree is notable for its large, showy, bright yellow flowers that bloom in the dry season before the new leaves emerge, creating a stunning display against the bare branches. The bark is smooth and light gray, and the tree produces a woody capsule fruit.
The Buttercup Tree is valued for its ornamental flowers and is often used in tropical and subtropical gardens for its striking floral display. It is relatively easy to maintain, requiring minimal care once established. In cultivation, it prefers full sun and well-drained soils but can tolerate a range of soil types. It is drought-tolerant, making it suitable for xeriscaping. The tree’s wood is sometimes used for light construction, and various parts of the plant are used in traditional medicine. However, it is not commonly harvested for timber due to its small size. Gardeners should be aware that the tree can produce numerous seedlings, which may require management to prevent unwanted spread.CC BY-SA 4.0
