Summary
Coleus barbatus, also known as Plectranthus barbatus and commonly referred to as boldo brasileiro or boldo-da-terra in Portuguese or Wooly Plectranthus, is a tropical perennial herb. It is a member of the Lamiaceae family, which is distinct from the typical coleus species. This plant is native to the subtropical Asia and Africa. It typically grows in well-drained soils in open, sunny environments. Coleus barbatus reaches a height of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters) and spreads 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters) wide, featuring green, ovate leaves and spikes of blue to white flowers that bloom in the summer. The plant is known for producing forskolin, an active compound used in pharmaceutical research.
In cultivation, Coleus barbatus is valued for its medicinal properties and is often grown in herb gardens or as an ornamental plant in tropical and subtropical climates. It requires a warm environment, consistent moisture, and well-draining soil. While it prefers full sun, it can tolerate partial shade. It is not commonly used in traditional landscaping but may be used in ethnobotanical gardens or as a potted plant. Gardeners should be aware that it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered and may require protection from cold temperatures.CC BY-SA 4.0
