Summary
Coleus caninus, synonym Plectranthus caninus, commonly known as the Scaredy Cat Plant, is a semi-succulent perennial herb native to southern and eastern Africa, India, and Myanmar, where it thrives in open woodlands and on forest edges. It typically grows to a height of 18-24 inches (45-60 cm) and spreads to a similar width. The plant features green foliage with a fine texture and produces small, inconspicuous lavender flowers during the warmer months. The leaves emit a strong scent when touched, resembling eucalyptus, which is effective at deterring pests and animals.
The Scaredy Cat Plant is valued for its pest-repellent properties and is often used in gardens to keep away cats, dogs, and rodents. It is easy to grow and maintain, making it a popular choice for borders and as a ground cover in areas where animal deterrence is desired. This plant prefers well-drained soil, can tolerate mild drought once established, and thrives in full sun to partial shade. It can be propagated easily from cuttings, allowing gardeners to quickly expand their plantings. While generally disease-free, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered. It is not known to be invasive and does not typically present problems with aggressive roots or other cultivation issues.CC BY-SA 4.0
