Summary
Collomia grandiflora, commonly known as Grand Collomia, is an annual herb native to open woodlands and meadows, often associated with pine forests in the Western United States. It typically grows to about 1 meter (3 ft 3 in) tall and features an erect, hairy or fuzzy stem that may exhibit red to green hues. The plant’s foliage consists of long, lance-shaped leaves up to 10 centimeters (4 inches) in length, with the lowermost leaves sometimes displaying toothed margins. The inflorescence is a cluster of several flowers, which can be white, yellow, or orange, and are particularly showy due to their size and the contrast of blue pollen on the anthers. Flowering occurs in late spring to early summer. The fruit is a capsule containing sticky seeds that can adhere to animals and facilitate dispersal.
Grand Collomia is appreciated for its vibrant flowers and is often used in wildflower gardens, native plant landscapes, and as a border plant. It is relatively easy to maintain, requiring minimal care once established. The plant thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soils with low to medium moisture levels. While it is not commonly known for having aggressive roots or serious disease problems, it can self-seed prolifically under favorable conditions, which may be considered undesirable in some managed landscapes.CC BY-SA 4.0
