Comanthosphace japonica, commonly known as Japanese Shrub Mint, is a deciduous shrub native to the understory of temperate forests and woodland edges in Southeastern China and Japan. It typically grows to a height and width of 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters), forming a compact, mounded shape. The plant features aromatic foliage and spikes of tubular, lavender to pink flowers that bloom in late summer to early fall, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies. The flowers are modestly showy, adding a subtle charm to garden settings.

Japanese Shrub Mint is appreciated for its fragrant leaves and late-season flowers, which provide interest after many other plants have finished blooming. It is used in shaded border plantings, woodland gardens, and as a ground cover. This shrub thrives in part shade to full shade, preferring consistently moist, well-drained soils rich in organic matter. While generally low-maintenance, it may require protection from harsh winter winds in colder climates.
