Summary

Conostylis aculeata, commonly known as Prickly Conostylis, is an evergreen perennial herb native to sandy plains and coastal heathlands in Western Australia. It forms tufted clumps typically 30 cm (12 in) wide and up to 60 cm (24 in) high. The leaves are flat, green to bluish-green, and can reach 60 cm (24 in) in length and 1 cm (0.39 in) in width, with margins usually bearing widely spaced spines. The flower stem is green, simple or multi-branched, ranging from 3–45 cm (1.2–17.7 in) in length, often as long as or longer than the leaves. The bracts are brown or green, flexible, smooth, dry, and thin. The perianth is yellow both inside and outside the tube, hairy, and measures 5–12 mm (0.20–0.47 in) long, with lobes that are whitish inside and 3–9 mm (0.12–0.35 in) long. The stamens are upright, and flowers are borne in dense, terminal clusters, blooming from August to November, offering a showy display.

Prickly Conostylis is valued for its unique foliage and bright, attractive flowers, which add texture and color to garden settings. It is often used in rockeries, native plant gardens, and as a border plant. This species is adapted to well-drained sandy soils and tolerates drought, making it a low-maintenance option for water-wise gardens. It thrives in full sun to part shade and requires medium amounts of water. While generally disease-free, it can be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils. Prickly Conostylis is not known for being invasive outside its native range, but as with any plant, local conditions should be considered before cultivation.CC BY-SA 4.0
