Estimated Native Range
Summary
Coprosma rotundifolia, commonly known as Round-Leaved Coprosma, is an evergreen shrub native to the coastal forests, scrublands, and rocky areas of New Zealand. It typically grows to a height of 2-5 meters (6.5-16 feet), forming a large bushy shape with a spread that can be quite wide. The leaves are glossy, rounded, and thick, which is an adaptation to its native windy coastal habitats. The inconspicuous flowers, which are greenish-white, appear in clusters from late winter to spring (August to November in its native Southern Hemisphere), followed by small, spherical, orange-red berries that are attractive to birds.
Round-Leaved Coprosma is valued for its shiny, dense foliage and its resilience to coastal conditions, making it suitable for seaside gardens. It is often used as a hedge or screen plant and is appreciated for its low-maintenance requirements, although it benefits from winter pruning to maintain its shape. This plant prefers moist, well-drained, fertile soil but can tolerate a range of soil types, including those with higher calcium carbonate content. It is best grown in full sun to part shade and requires medium amounts of water once established. While generally pest-free, it can be susceptible to scale insects and may suffer from root rot if overwatered.CC BY-SA 4.0
