Estimated Native Range
Summary
Coprosma virescens, commonly known as Mingimingi, is an evergreen shrub native to the coastal and lowland forests, as well as scrublands of New Zealand. It typically grows to a height of 2 to 3 meters (6 ft 7 in to 9 ft 10 in) and features small, leathery leaves that are a vibrant green, contributing to its dense, bushy appearance. The inconspicuous male flowers are apetalous and occur in axillary clusters of one to two on very short branches, while the female flowers are solitary at the ends of short branchlets. The flowering season is generally in the spring, but the flowers are not particularly showy. However, if pollinated, female plants produce attractive, colorful berries.
Mingimingi is valued for its hardy nature and textural foliage, making it a suitable choice for hedges, screens, and coastal gardens where wind tolerance is necessary. It thrives in full sun to part shade and requires medium amounts of water, with a preference for well-drained soils. While it is relatively low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to scale insects and root rot in poorly drained conditions. Mingimingi is not known for aggressive roots or significant disease problems, but gardeners should be aware of potential pest issues.CC BY-SA 4.0
