Estimated Native Range
Summary
Coreopsis palmata, commonly known as Stiff Tickseed, is a deciduous perennial herb native to North American tallgrass prairies, particularly in the Central United States. It typically reaches about 80 centimeters (32 inches) in height and features narrow, lance-shaped leaves. The flower heads are composed of yellow ray florets that can be up to 2.5 centimeters long, often a paler yellow compared to other native Coreopsis species. The center of the flower head contains numerous small disc florets that bloom yellow and become darker as they mature. Stiff Tickseed flowers in summer, and its foliage may turn reddish in the fall, adding seasonal interest.
This species is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor soils, making it an excellent choice for naturalistic plantings, prairie restorations, and wildflower gardens. It is also used in border plantings and as a cut flower. Stiff Tickseed prefers full sun and can tolerate low to medium water conditions, making it suitable for xeriscaping. It is adaptable to various soil types, provided they have good drainage. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to powdery mildew and should be spaced adequately to promote air circulation.CC BY-SA 4.0
