Estimated Native Range
Summary
Coreopsis tripteris, commonly known as Tall Tickseed, is a deciduous perennial herb native to a variety of habitats including open woodlands, prairies, plains, and forest edges in the Central and Eastern USA, as well as Ontario, Canada. It typically grows to nearly 100 cm (40 inches) in height, but can occasionally reach up to 200 cm (80 inches). The plant has an upright form with leaves mostly divided into three leaflets, which are smooth-edged to lobed and several centimeters long. From mid to late summer, Tall Tickseed produces flower heads with bright yellow ray florets that are 1 to 2 cm (0.4 to 0.8 in) long, sometimes longer, surrounding a center packed with disc florets in shades of reddish-brown to purplish. The flowers are quite showy and attract a variety of pollinators.
Tall Tickseed is valued for its vertical accent in the garden, its drought tolerance once established, and its ability to thrive with minimal care, making it a popular choice for naturalistic plantings and wildflower gardens. It is also used in borders and as a cut flower due to its long stems and vibrant blooms. This species prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade and is adaptable to various soil types, though it performs best in soils with medium drainage. While generally pest and disease-free, powdery mildew can sometimes be a problem in humid conditions. Tall Tickseed can spread by short, stout rhizomes, but it is not typically aggressive.CC BY-SA 4.0
