Estimated Native Range
Summary
Corydalis flavula, commonly known as Yellow Fumewort, is an annual herb native to the rich, moist woodlands and floodplains of the Central and Eastern USA. It typically grows to a height of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters) and a width of 1 foot (0.3 meters). This plant features delicate, compound leaves and loose clusters of tubular yellow flowers that bloom in early to mid-spring, adding a splash of color to the garden. The flowers are modest in size but can be quite showy when planted in masses.
Yellow Fumewort is valued for its early spring flowers and its ability to naturalize in shady garden spots. It is often used in woodland gardens, shade gardens, and naturalized areas where it can form attractive drifts. It prefers part shade but can tolerate full shade, and it thrives in moist, well-drained soils rich in organic matter. While it is not a drought-tolerant species, it does not require excessive watering once established. Gardeners should be aware that Corydalis flavula can self-seed and spread, which is desirable in naturalistic settings but may require management in more formal gardens.CC BY-SA 4.0
