Estimated Native Range
Summary
Corydalis solida, commonly known as Spring Fumewort, is a deciduous perennial herb native to woodland areas, forest clearings, and meadows throughout Europe, as well as Western Asia. It typically grows to a height of 25 cm (10 in) and is known as a spring ephemeral, with foliage that emerges early in the spring and dies back to its tuberous rootstock by summer. The plant features deeply divided, fern-like leaves and produces narrow, long-spurred flowers that are highly valued for their early spring bloom and range of colors, including mauve, purple, red, or white. The flowers are particularly showy, making it a favorite for spring gardens.
Spring Fumewort is appreciated for its early-season flowers and ability to thrive in shaded conditions, making it an excellent choice for woodland gardens, shaded borders, and underplanting beneath deciduous trees. It requires consistently moist soil with good drainage and prefers part shade to full shade, avoiding direct afternoon sun. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can self-seed and spread in favorable conditions, which should be monitored to prevent unwanted naturalization.CC BY-SA 4.0
