Estimated Native Range
Summary
Corylopsis spicata, commonly known as Spike Winter-Hazel, is a deciduous shrub native to the forest understories and mountainous regions of Japan and South Korea. It typically grows to a height of 4-8 feet (1.2-2.4 meters) and a width of 6-10 feet (1.8-3 meters). The plant has a spreading habit with arching branches and is noted for its pendulous chains of fragrant, pale yellow flowers that bloom in late winter to early spring before the leaves emerge, adding early seasonal interest to the garden. The flowers are quite showy and are followed by rounded, simple leaves that turn attractive shades of yellow in the fall.
Spike Winter-Hazel is valued for its early spring flowers and fall color, making it a popular choice for woodland gardens, mixed borders, and as a specimen plant. It is relatively low maintenance and can be grown as a foundation planting or in shaded areas where few other flowering shrubs bloom. It prefers moist, well-drained acidic soils and can tolerate part shade, although it flowers best in full sun. While generally disease-resistant, it can be susceptible to leaf spot and blight. It is not known for aggressive roots or significant pest problems.CC BY-SA 4.0
