Estimated Native Range
Summary
Cotoneaster glaucophyllus, commonly known as Glaucous Cotoneaster, is an evergreen or semi-deciduous shrub native to rocky hillsides, forest margins, and scrub areas in southern China. It can grow up to 5 meters (16 ft) tall with a similar spread, often forming a dense, rounded shape. The leaves are small, 1-2.5 cm long, and are dull to somewhat shiny with a mid-green color on the upper surface and light green undersides. In late spring to early summer, the plant produces clusters of small, white flowers which are followed by showy red berries in the fall, providing visual interest and food for birds.
Glaucous Cotoneaster is valued for its ease of maintenance, tolerance of a range of soil types, and its ability to provide year-round interest with its foliage, flowers, and berries. It is commonly used for ground cover, hedges, and in urban plantings due to its adaptability to pollution. It prefers full sun to part shade and requires well-drained soil. While it is drought-tolerant once established, it benefits from regular watering during prolonged dry periods. Be aware that it can become invasive in some regions, spreading by seed and rooting branches, so it is important to monitor its growth and prevent unwanted spread.CC BY-SA 4.0
