Crinodendron hookerianum, commonly known as Chilean Lantern Tree, is an evergreen shrub native to the temperate rainforests of Central and Southern Chile. It typically grows to a height of 8-10 feet and a width of 6-8 feet. The Chilean Lantern Tree is notable for its striking, lantern-shaped flowers that bloom in shades of pink, red, and white from late spring to early fall. The flowers are particularly showy and hang from the branches like small lanterns, making this plant a distinctive addition to any garden. The foliage is dark green and glossy, adding year-round interest.

The Chilean Lantern Tree thrives in fertile, moist but well-drained, humus-rich, acidic soil. It prefers partial shade, especially where roots can be kept cool and shaded, but can tolerate full sun if adequately protected. It is best suited for a sheltered woodland garden or against a south- or west-facing wall, where it is protected from cold, drying winds. While hardy to -7 °C, young growth and flower buds are vulnerable to hard frosts. In milder climates, it can be clipped to form a windbreak. This shrub is generally low-maintenance, requiring little pruning beyond the removal of dead wood. Propagation is typically done through greenwood cuttings in early summer or semi-ripe wood cuttings in late summer.
