Summary
Crinum macowanii, commonly known as the Cape Coast Lily or River Crinum, is a deciduous bulbous plant native to moist grasslands, vleis, woodlands, and along rivers in eastern, central, and southern Africa, particularly thriving at elevations between 3,300 to 8,500 feet. It typically grows up to 3 feet in height and width, with a clump-forming habit. The plant is characterized by its long, strap-shaped leaves and a striking inflorescence of trumpet-shaped flowers, which are highly scented and display a blend of white and dark pink stripes. The flowering season occurs in the summer, and the flowers are known for their showiness and fragrance.
The River Crinum is valued for its ornamental beauty, particularly the attractive, fragrant flowers that can enhance water gardens, borders, and naturalized areas. It is also recognized for its use in traditional African medicine. In cultivation, Crinum macowanii requires consistent moisture, well-draining soil, and full sun to partial shade. While it is relatively low maintenance, it is sensitive to frost and may require protection in colder climates. Overharvesting in the wild for medicinal use poses a significant threat to its populations, and gardeners are encouraged to source plants responsibly.CC BY-SA 4.0
