Estimated Native Range
Summary
Crocanthemum aldersonii, commonly known as Alderson Rushrose, is an evergreen shrub native to the chaparral and coastal sage scrub regions of California and Northwestern Mexico. It typically grows to a height of 2-5 feet (0.6-1.5 meters) and a width of 2-4 feet (0.6-1.2 meters). Alderson Rushrose has a compact, rounded form with small, needle-like leaves that contribute to its drought tolerance. It produces vibrant yellow flowers from late spring to early summer, which are particularly showy and attract a variety of pollinators.
Alderson Rushrose is valued for its drought resistance and ability to thrive in poor, rocky soils, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and naturalistic plantings in arid environments. It is also used for slope stabilization and habitat restoration projects. In cultivation, it requires minimal maintenance, tolerating full sun and low water conditions once established. While it is not commonly afflicted by diseases, overwatering can lead to root rot. It is not known to be invasive outside its native range, but gardeners should always monitor non-native plants for unexpected spread.CC BY-SA 4.0
