Summary
Crocanthemum bicknellii, commonly known as Hoary Frostweed, is a deciduous perennial subshrub or herb that is native to sandy open woodlands, dry prairies, and rocky outcrops in the Central and Northeastern USA and Canada. It typically grows to a height of 8–24 inches (200–610 mm). The plant features a single yellow flower, occasionally two, on each stem from May to June, with each bloom lasting only a single day. The flowers, measuring between 3/4 and 1 1/4 inches across, have five petals and are moderately showy. Hoary Frostweed’s leaves and stems are covered in fine hairs, giving them a frosted appearance, with the leaves arranged alternately and the stems varying in color from brown to green.
Hoary Frostweed is valued for its drought tolerance and the unique texture provided by its hairy foliage, making it a suitable choice for xeriscaping and naturalistic plantings. It is often used in rock gardens, native plant gardens, and as a ground cover in dry, sunny areas. This plant thrives in full sun and can tolerate low to medium water conditions, preferring well-drained soils. While it is not known for significant pest or disease issues, it can be sensitive to overwatering and poor drainage.CC BY-SA 4.0
