Summary
Crocus biflorus, commonly known as Silvery Crocus, is a deciduous perennial bulb native to a variety of habitats including meadows, scrublands, and woodlands in Southern Europe and Western Asia, particularly in Sicily, Italy. It typically grows to 6 cm (2.4 in) tall and wide. The Silvery Crocus is characterized by its striking flowers, which can vary in color from pale mauve to white, often featuring darker stripes on the outer tepals. These flowers are particularly notable for their early spring appearance, often emerging even when snow is still on the ground. The corm of the plant is globe-shaped with flattened ends and is covered with a smooth tunic that has two or three rings. The flowers, with their white-lilac petals and yellow throats, are complemented by purple-blue striped outer surfaces, making them quite showy.
The Silvery Crocus is valued for its early bloom time, adding color to gardens when few other plants are flowering. It is commonly used in rock gardens, borders, and as a naturalizing plant in grassy areas. This crocus prefers full sun but can tolerate light shade and requires well-drained soil with medium moisture. It is generally low-maintenance, but it can be susceptible to corm rot if planted in overly wet conditions. The Silvery Crocus is also appreciated for its ability to attract pollinators early in the season.CC BY-SA 4.0
