Summary

Crocus chrysanthus, commonly known as Snow Crocus, is a perennial herbaceous bulb of the Crocus genus, native to scrub and meadows in the Balkans, Turkey, and the Middle East. It is a diminutive species, reaching only 3–4 inches (7.6–10.2 cm) in height, and is celebrated for its vivid orange-yellow, bowl-shaped flowers that appear in late winter or early spring, often emerging through the snow. The flowers are more numerous per bulb than those of the larger Crocus vernus, yet smaller in size. The foliage is slender with a distinctive silver central stripe.

Snow Crocus is valued for its early bloom time, adding color to the garden when few other plants are flowering. It is ideal for naturalizing in grass, rock gardens, and woodland borders, and is also used in container planting due to its small size. It prefers well-drained soil and can tolerate a range of light conditions from full sun to part shade. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to corm rot if planted in overly wet conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
