Summary
Croton setigerus, commonly known as Doveweed, is an annual herb native to the arid and semi-arid regions of California, Oregon, Nevada, and Baja California, where it thrives in open grasslands, chaparral, and scrub habitats. It typically grows low to the ground with a height of up to 2 feet. Doveweed has distinctive furry, felt-like, hexagon-shaped leaves that are pale pink-green in color. During its flowering season, which occurs in the late spring to summer, it produces small, inconspicuous green flowers covered in soft bristles. The flowers are not particularly showy, but they do attract pollinators. When crushed, the leaves emit a sweet odor that can be unpleasant to some people.
Doveweed is valued for its drought tolerance and is often used in xeriscaping and as an ornamental plant in areas with water restrictions. It is well-suited to container gardening and can add unique texture to a pot arrangement. Gardeners appreciate its low water needs and ability to grow in soils with fast drainage. It prefers full sun but can tolerate some shade. While generally easy to maintain, it is important to avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. There are no widely known diseases or aggressive root problems associated with Croton setigerus, making it a hassle-free choice for gardeners. However, its potential to self-seed and spread should be monitored to prevent unwanted proliferation in the garden.CC BY-SA 4.0
