Estimated Native Range
Summary
Cupressus nevadensis, commonly known as Paiute Cypress, is an evergreen tree native to the chaparral and closed-cone pine-cypress forests of California, particularly in the Sierra Nevada range. It is a smaller cypress species, typically growing to a height and width of 7-33 feet (2-10 meters), with a conical to rounded crown. The tree’s scale-like leaves are dark green, and it produces small, spherical cones that mature in two years. The bark is fibrous and can be reddish-brown to gray in color.
Paiute Cypress is valued for its drought tolerance and adaptability to poor soils, making it suitable for xeriscaping and native plant gardens. It is also used for reforestation projects and as an ornamental tree in residential landscapes. This tree prefers full sun exposure and can tolerate a range of soil types, provided they have good drainage. While it is low-maintenance and requires minimal water once established, it is susceptible to cypress canker disease, which can be a significant problem in some areas.CC BY-SA 4.0
