Estimated Native Range
Summary
Curio articulatus, commonly known as the candle plant, pickle plant, or hot dog cactus, is a deciduous succulent native to the arid regions of South Africa, particularly the Western Cape. It typically forms sprawling clumps and spreads by tubers, reaching a height of 6-12 inches (15-30 cm). The plant features distinctive bluish-green or grey sausage-shaped stems that resemble pickles or hot dogs, hence its common names. The stems are mostly leafless, but during the winter, small leaves may appear. Curio articulatus blooms in the late summer to fall, producing small, white to pinkish discoid flowers that are not particularly showy but add a subtle charm to the plant.
The candle plant is valued for its unique and interesting form, making it a popular choice for ornamental container gardens, rockeries, and as a curiosity in succulent collections. It requires well-draining soil, minimal water, and can tolerate part shade to full sun, making it a low-maintenance option for gardeners. While it is drought-tolerant, it is sensitive to frost and should be protected from cold temperatures. The cultivar ’Candlelight’ has been recognized with the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit for its horticultural merit. In cultivation, it is important to avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.CC BY-SA 4.0
