Summary
Cycas thouarsii, commonly known as Madagascar Cycad, is an evergreen tree-like plant native to Madagascar and coastal areas of East Africa. It is part of the ancient group of plants known as cycads, which have a palm-like appearance but are not true palms. Cycas thouarsii typically reaches heights of 10-18 feet (3-5.5 meters) with a spread of 6-10 feet (1.8-3 meters). The plant features a stout trunk topped with a crown of large, stiff, feather-like leaves that can be up to 9 feet (2.7 meters) long. The leaves are bright green and glossy, adding to the plant’s ornamental value. Cycas thouarsii is dioecious, meaning individual plants are either male or female, with male plants producing cones and female plants producing seeds within megasporophylls. The species is not known for showy flowers but is grown for its striking foliage and architectural form.
Madagascar Cycad is valued for its tropical appearance and is often used as a focal point in gardens. It is suitable for container planting, which allows for movement to protect the plant from cold temperatures. This cycad prefers moist but well-drained soil and can tolerate a range of light conditions from full sun to full shade, provided there is sufficient humidity. It is sensitive to frost and should be protected or moved indoors in cooler climates. Overwatering or poor drainage can lead to root rot, which is a common issue. It is also susceptible to pests such as scale insects and mealybugs.CC BY-SA 4.0
