Summary
Cyclamen cilicium, commonly known as Cilician Cyclamen, is a deciduous perennial herb originating from rocky, forested slopes and alpine meadows in southwestern Turkey. This species of flowering plant is admired for its compact growth habit, forming a low mound about 10 cm (3.9 in) tall and broad. The foliage is particularly attractive, with heart-shaped or oval leaves that are green, often adorned with intricate silver patterning. The flowers of Cilician Cyclamen are notable for their delicate beauty, blooming in autumn with 5 sepals and 5 upswept petals that range from white to rose-pink, accented by magenta markings at the base. The blooms are also fragrant, adding another layer of appeal.
Cilician Cyclamen is valued for its ornamental leaves and charming flowers, which make it a popular choice for rock gardens, woodland plantings, and as a container specimen. It has been recognized with the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit (confirmed 2017) for its garden performance. Cultivation requires careful attention to mimic its native conditions; it thrives in part shade and benefits from medium water and well-draining soil. Although hardy to −5 °C (23 °F), it prefers a warm or coastal climate. In regions where a hot, dry summer cannot be provided, growing under glass may be preferable to ensure the necessary rest period. Overwatering or poor drainage can lead to tuber rot, so maintaining proper soil conditions is crucial.CC BY-SA 4.0
