This cactus can grow up to 7 feet tall and is characterized by its cylindrical green segments with interlocking spines that provide a silver or golden appearance, hence the common names. The flowers, which bloom in late spring to early summer, are usually greenish-yellow, sometimes with a pinkish hue, and are followed by lumpy, spiny fruit.

Silver cholla is valued for its unique texture and form, making it a striking addition to xeriscapes and desert gardens. It is drought-tolerant, requiring minimal water once established, and thrives in well-draining soils under full sun.
