Estimated Native Range
Summary
Cyperus capitatus, commonly known as Capitate Galingale, is a deciduous perennial herb native to sandy shores, wetlands, and marshes around the Mediterranean Basin and in parts of North Africa. It typically grows to a height of 2-5 feet (0.6-1.5 meters) and a width of 0.2-0.4 feet (0.06-0.1 meters). The plant features a cluster of greenish-brown spikelets at the top of triangular stems, which are particularly noticeable during its flowering season in the summer months. The flowers are not showy, but the plant’s overall form adds texture to garden settings.
Capitate Galingale is valued for its ability to thrive in wet conditions and is often used in water gardens, rain gardens, and as a part of naturalistic plantings in damp areas. It is also suitable for erosion control on streambanks and lakeshores due to its dense root system. This plant prefers full sun exposure and requires high amounts of water, making it ideal for areas with slow or wet drainage. While it is not commonly known for any significant horticultural problems, it can become invasive in some regions outside its native range, and gardeners should be cautious about planting it in areas where it could spread uncontrollably.CC BY-SA 4.0
