Summary
Cyperus exaltatus, commonly known as Tall Flat-Sedge, is an evergreen perennial herb, though sometimes behaving as an annual, native to wetlands, marshes, and along the edges of ponds and streams in Southeast Asia, East Asia, Central Africa, and Australia. It typically grows to a height of 0.5-2 feet (0.15-0.6 meters) and a width of about 1 foot (0.3 meters). This sedge forms dense clumps of triangular stems topped with umbrella-like clusters of narrow leaves and small, greenish-brown flowers that may not be particularly showy but are interesting in structure.
Tall Flat-Sedge is valued for its ability to thrive in wet conditions, making it suitable for water gardens, rain gardens, and as a naturalizing plant in damp areas of the landscape. It can also be used to stabilize soil in erosion-prone areas. In cultivation, it requires full sun to part shade and prefers high amounts of water, often growing well in soils that are poorly drained or even submerged. While it is not known for significant pest or disease issues, it can become invasive in some regions outside its native range, so care should be taken to manage its spread.CC BY-SA 4.0
