Cyperus strigosus, commonly known as false nutsedge or straw-colored flatsedge, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to a wide range of wetland habitats including marshes, wet meadows, stream banks, and pond margins across the United States, Cuba, and Canada. It is also commonly found in disturbed areas such as ditches and cultivated fields. This sedge typically grows up to 28 inches (71 cm) tall and features an inflorescence of numerous straw-colored spikelets that give it its common name. The flowering season extends through the summer months, and while the flowers are not particularly showy, they have a unique, bristly appearance that can add texture to a garden setting.

False nutsedge is valued for its ability to thrive in wet conditions and is often used in rain gardens, bioswales, and as a soil stabilizer along waterways. It is adaptable to a range of soil types, provided they are consistently moist. It prefers full sun to part shade and can be a useful plant for erosion control due to its dense network of roots. While not aggressive, it can spread in suitable conditions and may require management in a garden setting to prevent unwanted spread.
