Estimated Native Range
Summary
Cyrilla racemiflora, commonly known as Swamp Titi, is typically a semi-deciduous shrub or small tree native to wetlands, swamps, and boggy areas in the Southeastern United States, as well as parts of the Caribbean, Central America and South America. It can grow up to 15 meters (49 ft) tall with a diameter greater than 1 meter (3 ft 3 in) in its native tropical rainforest habitat. In temperate regions, it usually remains a shrub reaching up to 4 meters (13 ft) tall. Swamp Titi is characterized by its elongated clusters of small, fragrant white flowers that bloom in the summer, making it quite noticeable when in flower. The foliage is generally evergreen, but some leaves turn a brilliant red in autumn before falling, especially in plants at the northern edge of its range where it tends to be more deciduous.
Swamp Titi is valued for its ornamental white flowers and the striking red fall foliage. It is used in wetland restoration projects and can be planted in rain gardens, as it tolerates and thrives in wet conditions. It prefers full sun to part shade and can adapt to a range of soil drainage conditions, from medium to slow. While it requires high amounts of water, it is relatively low-maintenance once established. Gardeners should be aware that it can suffer from root rot if drainage is inadequate.CC BY-SA 4.0
