Summary

Cyrtanthus obliquus, commonly known as Knysna Lily, is an evergreen perennial bulb native to the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces of South Africa. It thrives in rocky outcrops and slopes in fynbos and renosterveld vegetation, which are part of the Cape Floristic Region, known for its high biodiversity and endemism. The plant typically reaches a height of 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) with a similar spread. The Knysna Lily is characterized by its spiraling, greyish-green leaves and large, pendulous, tubular flowers that are most commonly red or orange, blooming in the spring and summer months. The flowers are particularly showy and can add a vibrant splash of color to any garden setting.

The Knysna Lily is valued for its drought tolerance and striking floral display, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens, Mediterranean gardens, and as a container plant. It requires minimal maintenance once established. For successful cultivation, it should be planted in well-draining soil and provided with full sun exposure. While it is adapted to dry winter conditions, during the growing season, it benefits from regular but moderate watering. Overwatering or poor drainage can lead to bulb rot. It is not known to have significant disease or pest problems, but it can be sensitive to frost and may require protection in cooler climates.CC BY-SA 4.0
