Estimated Native Range
Summary
Dactylorhiza majalis, commonly known as the Broad-leaved Marsh Orchid, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to a variety of wetland habitats, including fens, damp meadows, and marshy woodlands across much of Europe and parts of Asia. It typically grows 6 to 15.5 inches tall and features a rosette of broadly lanceolate leaves that are often spotted or mottled. From May to July, it produces a spike of purplish-red flowers that are highly attractive to pollinators. The flowers are showy and can add a splash of color to naturalistic garden settings.
The Broad-leaved Marsh Orchid is valued for its ornamental flowers and is often used in wildflower gardens and conservation projects to enhance biodiversity. It requires specific conditions to thrive, including consistently moist, nutrient-poor soils and a symbiotic relationship with mycorrhizal fungi for seed germination. This orchid prefers partial shade but can tolerate full sun in cooler climates. It is generally low-maintenance once established in the right conditions but is sensitive to over-fertilization and habitat disturbance. Due to its specific requirements and beauty, it is sometimes cultivated by specialized orchid enthusiasts.CC BY-SA 4.0
