Estimated Native Range
Summary
Dais cotinifolia, commonly known as Pompon Tree, is an evergreen or semi-deciduous tree native to the high plateau woodlands of Southern Africa. It achieves a height of 6-18 feet (1.8-5.5 meters) and a width of 5-14 feet (1.5-4.3 meters). The Pompon Tree is notable for its rounded, dense canopy and smooth, pale grey bark. During the spring and summer months, it produces an abundance of pink, sweet-scented, globular flowerheads approximately 10 cm across, which are highly attractive to bees and butterflies. The flowers are followed by small, brown, nut-like fruits.
The Pompon Tree is valued for its compact size, making it suitable for small gardens and urban landscapes. It can be cultivated as a small tree or a multi-stemmed shrub, and its profuse flowering adds ornamental value. It is often used in gardens for its showy flowers and as a feature plant in mixed borders. This species requires full sun to part shade and thrives in fertile, well-drained soils. While it prefers regular watering, it is somewhat drought-tolerant once established. Gardeners should be aware that the Pompon Tree may require pruning to maintain its shape and can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
