Summary
Dalea versicolor, commonly known as Oakwoods Prairie Clover, is a deciduous subshrub native to open woodlands, grasslands, and scrub areas in Mexico and the southwestern United States. It typically grows to a height of 1-3 feet (0.3-0.9 meters) and a width of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters). This plant forms a compact mound with fine-textured, pinnate leaves that are green to gray-green in color. It produces spikes of purple to violet flowers that are highly attractive to pollinators from late summer to early winter, depending on the local climate.
Oakwoods Prairie Clover is valued for its drought tolerance and long blooming period, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping, rock gardens, and native plant landscapes. It thrives in full sun and requires well-drained soil, preferably with a gravelly or sandy composition. While it is low-maintenance and adapted to arid conditions, it benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells. It is not commonly afflicted by diseases or pests, but overwatering can lead to root rot.CC BY-SA 4.0
