Summary

Daphne odora, commonly known as Winter Daphne, is an evergreen shrub native to China and Taiwan, and later introduced to Japan and Korea, where it thrives in woodland margins, scrub areas, and shaded hillsides. It typically grows to a height of 3-4 feet (0.9-1.2 meters) and a similar width. Winter Daphne is celebrated for its intensely fragrant, pale-pink flowers that bloom in late winter to early spring, each tubular bloom having four spreading lobes. The glossy, leathery leaves add to its ornamental value. Although it rarely fruits, when it does, it produces attractive red berries.

Winter Daphne is valued for its sweet aroma, which can fill a garden space, earning it the poetic name "chullihyang" or "thousand-mile scent" in Korea. It is often used in borders, as a foundation plant, or in containers. It prefers fertile, slightly acidic, peaty, well-drained soils and does best in part shade, although it can tolerate full sun in cooler climates. It is hardy to −10 °C (14 °F) and requires medium amounts of water with good drainage to prevent root rot. Gardeners should be aware that all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested, and it can suffer from diseases such as leaf spots and virus infections.CC BY-SA 4.0
