Estimated Native Range
Summary
Dasylirion longissimum, commonly known as Mexican Grass Tree, is an evergreen succulent native to the semi-desert regions of northeastern Mexico. It typically grows to 4 to 6 feet (1.2 to 1.8 m) tall and wide, but can reach up to 12 feet (3.7 m) in height and 8 feet (2.4 m) in diameter under ideal conditions. The plant features long, narrow, bladed leaves that can be up to 4 feet (1.2 m) in length and 0.24 inches (6 mm) across, forming a dense, spherical form. The Mexican Grass Tree is particularly noted for its striking architectural appearance and the white, showy flowers it produces in the summer and fall, which are borne on tall spikes well above the foliage.
The Mexican Grass Tree is highly valued in cultivation for its dramatic form, drought tolerance, and low maintenance requirements, making it a popular choice for xeriscaping and as an accent plant in arid gardens. It thrives in full sun and requires very little water once established, preferring well-drained soils. It is hardy to 15 °F (−9 °C), which allows it to be grown in many regions beyond its native range. While it is generally disease-free, it can occasionally suffer from root rot if overwatered. It is also used in the Southwestern United States and California for larger landscape projects where water conservation is a priority.CC BY-SA 4.0
