Summary
Dasylirion texanum, commonly known as Texas Sotol, is an evergreen succulent or shrub native to the Chihuahuan Desert and Tamaulipan mezquital ecoregions, including rocky soils and bluffs in Northeastern Mexico and Texas. As a monocot flowering plant, it is smaller than other Dasylirions, with a short, stout trunk typically less than 1.5 feet tall. Its long, narrow, toothed foliage can reach 3–6 feet in length, forming a dense rosette that adds architectural interest to the landscape. The plant produces a tall flower spike that can reach up to 15 feet, bearing small, creamy-white flowers that are attractive to pollinators during the summer months.
Texas Sotol is valued for its drought tolerance and striking form, making it a popular choice for xeriscaping, native plant gardens, and natural landscapes. It is also used in ecological restoration projects. This plant thrives in full sun and requires minimal water once established, preferring well-drained soils. While it is generally low-maintenance, it is important to avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. Texas Sotol can also be used to create distilled spirits similar to tequila and mezcal.CC BY-SA 4.0
