Estimated Native Range
Summary
Deinandra paniculata, commonly known as San Diego Tarweed, Panicled Tarplant, or Grassland Tarweed, is an annual herb native to the coastal sage scrub and chaparral of California, particularly thriving in the Mediterranean climate of the region. It is adapted to open, sunny environments and is often found in grasslands, coastal prairies, and other open areas, usually on sandy or gravelly soils. This plant exhibits a moderate growth rate and typically reaches a height of 1-2.5 feet (0.3-0.8 meters) with a width of 0.5-1 feet (0.2-0.3 meters). Its appearance is characterized by narrow, sticky leaves and branching stems topped with clusters of bright yellow flowers that bloom in the summer, providing a showy display that attracts a variety of pollinators.
San Diego Tarweed is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor soils, making it a suitable choice for xeriscaping and restoration projects. It is also used in wildflower mixes for naturalistic landscaping. In cultivation, it requires minimal care, doing best in full sun and in fast-draining sandy soils, with low amounts of water. While it is not commonly found in traditional garden settings, its resilience and attractive summer blooms make it an interesting addition to native plant gardens and wildflower meadows.CC BY-SA 4.0
