Summary
Delphinium carolinianum, commonly known as Carolina Larkspur, is a deciduous perennial herb native to the open prairies, grasslands, and scrublands of the Central and Southeastern United States. It typically grows to a height of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters) and a width of 0.8-2 feet (0.2-0.6 meters). The plant features slender stems and deeply lobed leaves, with a profusion of blue to purple flowers that bloom in the spring and early summer, adding a splash of color to the garden. The flowers are quite showy and attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Carolina Larkspur is valued for its vibrant floral display and is often used in wildflower gardens, borders, and meadows where its vertical form can contrast with lower-growing plants. It is relatively easy to maintain, but it does require well-drained soil and consistent moisture. While it thrives in full sun, it can also tolerate part shade, especially in hotter climates.
