Estimated Native Range
Summary
Delphinium parryi, commonly known as San Bernardino Larkspur or Parry’s Larkspur, is a perennial herb native to the chaparral, coastal sage scrub, and oak woodlands of California, extending from the San Francisco Bay Area south into Baja California. It typically grows up to 3 feet tall and features fuzzy stems and deeply lobed leaves. The inflorescence is a showy raceme with up to 60 flowers, each borne on long pedicels. The flowers exhibit a striking range of colors from deep purple to light blue, with the upper petals often white, and a spur that can extend over 1 inch long, blooming from March to May.
San Bernardino Larkspur is valued for its vibrant floral display and is often used in wildflower gardens, native plant landscapes, and as a border plant. It prefers full sun to part shade and requires well-drained soils. While it is drought-tolerant once established, it benefits from occasional watering during prolonged dry periods. This species is relatively low-maintenance but can be susceptible to fungal diseases in overly moist conditions. It is also important to note that all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested, so caution should be exercised if planting in areas accessible to children and pets.CC BY-SA 4.0
